intermedium 2
radio-based media art festival

The double CD on/off intermedium documents the Festival intermedium 2, featuring a choice of six artistic projects from the Festival, including two of the award-winning pieces.

intermedium originates in the domain of radiophonics, radio drama and audio art. intermedium is interdisciplinary and sees itself as an initiative of radio to try out artistic cooperations with other media and arts. The international festival, conceived as a biennial event, is focused on intermedia projects where the artistic performance on stage functions, at the same time, as a live radio play. intermedium 1 premiered in autumn 1999 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.

The media art Festival intermedium 2 took place from 22 to 28 March 2002:
3 days at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM), 7 days on the radio and online.

More than 100 artists from 15 countries came to present Radio Play/Discourse/Network Art/Performance/Installation/VJ/DJ-ing. Ten public radio stations broadcast the 18-hour festival programme covering Germany, Austria and Switzerland, totalling more than 100 hours of radio.
In Karlsruhe, intermedium 2 attracted more than 2500 visitors. Internet users were able to follow the happenings in Karlsruhe live at www.intermedium2.de by means of audio and video streaming.

For the first time, the Bayerischer Rundfunk, as the initiator of intermedium, was donating the € 12,000 intermedium Award for an intermedia work presented at the Festival.

The organisers of intermedium 2 were Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Centre for Art and Media (ZKM). The partner bodies and co-organisers were the public radio stations HR, WDR, ORF (Austrian radio), DRS (Swiss radio), DLR, SWR, MDR, SR, RB, as well as schauspielfrankfurt (Frankfurt theatre company) and the Jan van Eyck Academy for Fine Art, Design and Theory in Maastricht.
